A fix is available — apply it.

CPython 3.9 and earlier doesn't disallow configuring an empty list ("[]") for SSLContext.set_npn_protocols() which is an invalid value for the underlying OpenSSL API. This results in a buffer over-read when NPN is used (see CVE-2024-5535 for OpenSSL). This vulnerability is of low severity due to NPN being not widely used and specifying an empty list likely being uncommon in-practice (typically a protocol name would be configured).

What is CVE-2024-5642?
CVE-2024-5642 is a medium vulnerability published on June 27, 2024. CPython 3.9 and earlier doesn't disallow configuring an empty list ("[]") for SSLContext.setnpnprotocols() which is an invalid value for the underlying OpenSSL API. This results in a buffer over-read when NPN is used (see CVE-2024-5535 for OpenSSL). This vulnerability is of low severity due to NPN…
When was CVE-2024-5642 disclosed?
CVE-2024-5642 was first published in the National Vulnerability Database on June 27, 2024, with the most recent update on July 31, 2026. EchelonGraph re-ingests CVE updates from NVD on a 2-hour cycle, so this page reflects the latest published state.
Is CVE-2024-5642 actively exploited?
CVE-2024-5642 is not currently on CISA's Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog. FIRST EPSS estimates a 1% probability of exploitation in the next 30 days, which ranks it in the top 46.8% of all scored CVEs.
What is the CVSS score of CVE-2024-5642?
CVE-2024-5642 has a CVSS v3 base score of 6.5 (NVD).
How do I remediate CVE-2024-5642?
Patch to the fixed version published by the affected vendor. Where vendor advisories exist for CVE-2024-5642, EchelonGraph cross-links them in the Vendor Advisories panel below — those typically contain the canonical remediation steps, fixed version numbers, and any vendor-specific mitigations.
